Dobby comes from the term “draw boy,” referring to a child who would perch atop a loom to help the weaver complete intricate structures. The baby was replaced around 1840 by a mechanical system of wooden pegs called a “dobby loom”. Dobby designs are often white on white, thus accentuating the complex structures, which today are produced with computer technology.
